Foodbank Victoria

Foodbank Victoria was founded in 1994, as the state division of the national Foodbank Australia charity, a not-for-profit, non-aligned organisation who rescue and redistribute food to Australians experiencing hardship.

It was an initiative of the Camberwell Rotary Club, who felt compelled to do something about the amount of food going to waste when so many Victorians were struggling to make ends meet.

The organisation initially distributed food relief within Melbourne alone, but as partnerships grew with food producers, it extended its services to reach struggling Victorians in rural and remote areas too.

In 2004, Foodbank Victoria became a stand-alone organisation committed to providing food relief throughout metropolitan and rural Victoria.

On 21 December 2005 it merged with the Victorian Relief Committee, and jointly they became known as VicRelief Foodbank, now Victoria's largest independent emergency relief resource centre.
